Across the globe, attempts have been made to popularise mathematics at all levels by organising contests and competitions. The concept of organising competitions to spot mathematically talented students started in Hungary in 1894. This had a very good impact on school children and consequently many countries started organising such competitions. The first international competition was organised by Romania in 1959 and it gave birth to the present day Mathematics Olympiad.
Likewise, SEA Talent Support Organisation conducts pan-national exams like the National Olympiads and National Calliber Support Exam (NCSE) in subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Education and Mental Ability. These exams are conducted for classes I to XII across all the schools in the country. Exams like the Olympiads and NCSE give students a chance to assess themselves. Besides assessing the students, these exams also help in assessing the level of teaching science based subjects in each of the participating institutes.
